The Address

Lunar Eclipse, Iran, February 21, 2008.
"Where is the friend's house?,"
the rider asked in the twilight.
Heaven paused;
The passerby bestowed the flood of light on his lips to darkness of sands
And pointed to a poplar and said:
"Near the tree,
Is a garden-line greener than God's dream
Where love is bluer than the feathers of honesty.
Walk to the end of the lane which emerges from behind puberty,
Then turn towards the flower of solitude;
Two steps to the flower,
Stay by the eternal mythological fountain of earth
where a transparent fear will visit you.
In the flowing intimacy of the space you will hear a rustling sound:
You will see a child
Who has ascended a tall plane tree to pick up chicks from the nest of light.
Ask him:
Where is the friend's house?

Poem by Sohrab Sepehri, translated by M. Alexandrian. From here.

Nazy jan, here's a poem i've always cherished, The Rose Family by Robert Frost:

The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But now the theory goes
That the apple's a rose,
And the pear is, and so's
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only knows
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose--
But were always a rose.

I like your blog, here is a poem By Rumi, translated by Colman Barks.

Be clear like a mirror
reflecting nothing.

Be clean of pictures and the worry
that comes with images.

Gaze into what is not ashamed
or afraid of any truth.

Contain all human faces in your own
without any judgment of them.

Be pure emptiness.
What is inside that? you ask.
Silence is all I can say.

Oh my god! This is awesome, I havent actually started reading Sepehri yet...just read a couple of his poems, but this one is so well translated in english, I think most of the poems when translated loose their special touch, n its multiple meanings, which some how comes from the Persian it self.
But this transaltion works good, so intense, alluding to so many things. Seperhi himself is a mastero, and for me he is so inspiring.

Thanks for sharing! =)

Here is a poem by Rumi which i love and is often read to our little meditation group by our guru at the end of each session:

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

and I have to write this one:

I love Sohrab and his philosophy!

COLOURED

When I born, I Black,
When I grow up, I Black,
When I go in Sun, I Black,
When I scared, I Black,
When I sick, I Black,
And when I die, I still black,

And you White fella,

When you born, you Pink,
When you grow up, you White,
When you go in Sun, you Red,
When you cold, you Blue,
When you scared, you Yellow,
When you sick, you Green,
And when you die, you Gray,
And you calling me Colored ?

BTW, The poem is called Coloured...
I was about to write the poem by my dear poet, Ferydoun Moshiri, but suddenly I saw it was written in the comments!

I am writing the Love's Secret for you here:

Never seek to tell thy love,
Love that never told can be;
For the gentle wind doth move
Silently, invisibly.

I told my love, I told my love,
I told her all my heart,
Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears.
Ah! she did depart!

Soon after she was gone from me,
A traveller came by,
Silently, invisibly:
He took her with a sigh.
