An Eventful Sunday

Dinner and interview with Maestro Loris Tjeknavorian, Berkeley, Sunday, March 9, 2008.
I can't believe how late I got home tonight. I went to traffic school all day, and ended up going to see Darvag group's excellent new play, In Memory of Kazem Ashtari, in Berkeley. I was delighted to meet Maestro Loris Tjeknavorian at the play. He graciously agreed to be interviewed for a piece I will be writing soon. In search of a good time where his busy schedule would allow the meeting, we ended up agreeing to do the interview after the play. So he and I and a group of good friends went to my favorite restaurant in Berkeley and got it done. He is such a charming man, a true Iranian, and is full of life and kindness and love and humor. The man is really really funny, I'm not kidding you! I will start working on my story tomorrow and will let you see it as soon as it's ready.
So, it was a really long, exhausting, and exciting day. This will have to do for now. I didn't manage to reply to my emails or to your kind comments this weekend. There simply aren't enough hours in a day, it seems. I'll have to work on my time management this week. Have a good Monday y'all.

That's a great pleasure to know true iranians, distinguished in every aspect of science and art one by one through your interviews.
Keep up this good habitude and nurture us...thanks.

I cannot believe you have interviewed the Maestro. Waiting to read it!

You managed to do all that in 23 hours. I have been instead recovering from flu these couple of days, staying at home and resting.

Oh, Farideh Jan:

If only you knew how many people are disappointed in me for not writing and for not returning phone calls and for not following up their lives! I work a full-time job with a long commute and am devoted to my writing to the extent that I am able. Everything else seems to fall through the cracks occasionally and it leaves me feeling rushed and tense much of the time.

I really need to manage my time better. Thank you for your vote of confidence, though! You are so kind.

Dear Shokaran:

Hello and welcome to my piece of the world. I think there is so much that can be said about good Iranians, whether or not famous and artistic or intellectual. I try to say those things to the best of my ability. Thank you for your supportive words.

Shokaran means poison, right? Of the variety that socrates drank, right? What's in the name my friend? You certainly appear very sweet and not poisonous at all! Please come back again soon.

Ahmad Jan,

Khoda bad nadeh! I hope you are feeling better my friend.

My interview with Loris Tjeknavorian was about love and women. Wait until you read it, he is so awesome! You know, I have known quite a few artists and accomplished scientists and intellecuals in my lifetime. I feel bad in reporting that some of them are not nearly as nice as we would hope them to be up close and personal--well they are human and this discovery is not easy for most of us! Loris is a very nice and funny man. He talked about his children and about his love for Iran and about his feelings for his wife, which were all really sweet to hear. He told us many jokes and in-between the jokes, he would switch to his "maestro" lingo and talk about his motivation for his music. Priceless!

When I ran into him again last night in Stanford, he called me by name and was so kind to me, as though he has known me for a long time! A very down-to-earth man if you ask me, and a very good Iranian all the way through.

Get well soon Ahmad Jan. Thanks again for coming and commenting.

Salam Bayram Jan:

Oh, you missed such a great event last night! Hee Hee, you know, no matter how many masters and nobel laureates and fantastic intellectuals I meet, nobody can take your place in my heart! You are simply one of my most favorite people in this world! I couldn't answer the phone when you called, and I returned the call as soon as I could. If I had known that I would end up having dinner with the Maestro, I would have definitely taken you along. Oooh, this reminds me, I should send you your picture with Ala Hazrat and Anoushirvan Rohani. I'll do it right away! Be good azizam.

By the way, you didn't send me the photographs of Tehran preparing for Nowrooz! Come on, Farshad, give them here this side of the year, please! Take care doostam.
