Debbie, Jon, Elvis, and Las Vegas

My friend Debbie married her boyfriend of 10 years, Jon, two Saturdays ago. In a very humorous approach to marriage, as only Americans can, the two of them and their family members went to Las Vegas, where they got married in a chapel with an Elvis impersonator performing the ceremony for them! I asked Debbie why she chose to get married this way and she said because she and her boyfriend Jon were tired of all the more traditional and lavish ceremonies they had attended and wanted something novel and memorable for their wedding. Whether it is in a chapel, a winery, a church, a hotel, a park, or a home, I think the most important thing is for two people to really love and trust each other and to know that they want to spend the rest of their lives together. Debbie and Jon are sure. I wish them all the best in their union.

I love non-convential wedding. In fact, convential weddings bore me to death. The best wedding I attended was at a pet cemetry on Halloween. Everyone was required to attend with a Halloween costume...It was the most memorable wedding you could imagine. The bride did not wear a white wedding dress but her mom showed up with the most beautiful white wedding dress...hahaha

I have to write about it someday.

Serendip, your friends' wedding sounds hilarious! The bride's mother showed up in a wedding gown?! That's just so funny to even read about! As unconventional as Debbie's wedding was, she wass wearing a red dress which is the appropriate wedding dress color for a woman of Chinese descent. Be good.

Nazy jan: My friend's mom is French and quite a character. Unlike her daughter, she is a total snob. The ceremony was also original. A Native American priest did the ceremony in the manner of Hopi tribe. It was really sweet.

Serendip, you really should write about it! I have been smiling to myself all evening, envisioning it. When I was eight months pregnant with my second son, I was Matron of Honor to my American friend at her wedding. She, also, was eight months pregnant! Pictures of the two of us at her wedding in the park are a sight (only for the two of us now, as we wish NO ONE else to see them!). Your friend's wedding, however, wins the (wedding) cake! Be good.

What a wonderful and daring idea. I don't think I could ever bring myself to do it, but I applaud them for their "creativity". May the two live happily ever after...and visit Graceland for their anniversary. It's beautiful!

Assal Jan! Long time no see! Yes, it is only the American outlook that can produce such spontaneous outlook on something as dramatic as marriage! To keep the more traditional camp happy, Debbie had a traditional Chinese banquet hosted by her family in Los Angeles following this ceremony. I must say nothing compares to a Chinese wedding banquet when it comes to food at a wedding! I have attended several and in each, at least 10 courses were served. Yes, I join you in my best wishes for the couple. Ten years together should have made the proper foundation, wouldn't you agree? Be good Assal Jan!
