Paradise In Flames

"October 23rd, 2007, San Diego, California, USA. A home burns along Via Valle Vista in a neighborhood above Lake Hodges on the east side of the lake in San Diego, California. Photo by Eduardo Contreras"
Southern California burns in flames. Along with an estimated one million other people, my sweet young friend, Mersedeh, who volunteers tirelessly for San Diego's Peyk has had to evacuate her house with her mother to check into a hotel in Los Angeles. I have many relatives who live in the San Diego area, most of whom have their suitcases packed and in their cars, waiting for orders to evacuate. At least 1,300 homes have burnt down, with thousands more in danger. The raging Santa Ana winds have turned the entire area into an inferno. Please pray for the health and safety of all, and particularly the many Iranians who live in that area. I hope Mersedeh is safe and sound. My thoughts are with her and her family and all the others tonight.

Salam Marzieh Jan. Those fires are really scary. I hope everyone is safe from them. On a more nostalgic note, until I met people who lost their homes and memories in the 1989 Oakland fire, I had no idea how saddening it could be for people when they lose their homes like that. Insurance companies usually pay to replace the home, but no one can replace the lost memories people keep in their homes, in shoeboxes, in drawers, and in photo albums. Those are irreplaceable. Be good Marzieh Jan.

Salam Uni-Far Jan:

In order to reduce the risks of human casualties in case of an earthquake, California homes are mostly built with wooden frames and sheet rock (gach). This makes them very flammable, unfortunately. The seasonal winds of "Santa Ana," which blow from Southern California northwards, are very dangerous at this time of the year if there are any small fires on their path. In no time at all, the embers from the fire are picked up and delivered to other areas, where dry bushes, grass, and trees immediately catch fire and expose the homes nearby to danger. It is a very unfortunate but rather common occurrence. In 1989 we had a large fire in our area (Oakland fires) which burnt many people's homes. It is always a very sad thing to watch and to even know about, let alone to have to experience. I hope everyone is safe.
