Sohrab

Iranian literature has given the world marvels of beauty, wisdom, and poise in poems written by its many outstanding poets. Our poets such as Hafez, Molana (Rumi), Saadi, and Omar Khayyam, just to name a few, are not only sources of national pride for Iranians, as they are known and revered by many around the world, they are sources of pride to humanity.
Traditional Iranian poetry is much celebrated by Iranians of all educational and social backgrounds. In Iran, children learn to cite poems when they are in kindergarten. The miracle of a poet such as Hafez is that all Iranians read his poetry and each and every one of them believes that he knows what Hafez is telling them.
Among the more contemporary Iranian poets, many of whom I absolutely love, this one is very special and dear to me. Sohrab Sepehri was a poet, a painter, and a philosopher all in one. Reading his poetry brings such joy and optimism to me. You can see the painter in his poetry, because the imagery he describes, the trees, the flowers, the mountains, and the green valleys of his childhood Kashan are so vivid you can “see” them in his words. Of all his poems, there is one I know by heart which never gets tiring for me. It is called “And a message in transit,” (Va Payami Dar Rah). I looked for a suitable translation of the poem in English, but couldn’t find one online. I will have to translate bits of it here for you. You will forgive my clumsy attempt at this. This poem gives me so much hope every time I read it.
In lieu of my Friday Dance Post, which I have neglected for a reason recently, for this weekend post I would like to ask those of you who read this, to share some poetry with the rest of us. It doesn’t have to be by an Iranian poet, or it doesn’t have to be a Farsi poem. Just something that means something to you. Elaborate and talk about it if you like, but just the poem is fine, too.
Have a good weekend you all. Rest, relax and be happy. Confess your love to those you love, and read them poetry, encouraging them to read you poetry. You will see the magic.
And A Message In Transit
Someday, I will come and I will bring a message. I will pour light into veins. And I will call: You whose baskets are filled with sleep!I brought apples, red apples of sun.

The Invitation,
by Oriah Mountain Dreamer

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your
moon…
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own
sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers
and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

Hope you like this one. It reminds me of you.

Salm Mehran Jan. Where is your poem?

Nazy said...

Salam Atrisa Jan. Thanks for coming. I'm glad you will take my advice about reading poetry to those you love!

Poets are just like us, they feel the same feelings; only they know how to describe those feelings and thoughts using words and constructs we don't know or can't build. Poets have very important jobs on behalf of those of us who want to say things, but can't. Come again soon.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that signs its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at down with winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

[IF]

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

Hi Nazi,

Here is my contribution: a poem by James Kavanaugh:

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who prey upon them with IBM eyes
And sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
Who dream instead of snow and children and Halloween
And wonder if the leaves will change their color soon.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who anoint them for burial with greedy claws
And murder them for a merchant's profit and gain.
There are men too gentle for a corporate world
Who dream instead of candied apples and ferris wheels
And pause to hear the distant whistle of a train.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who devour them with eager appetite and search
For other men to prey upon and suck their childhood dry.
There are men too gentle for an accountant's world
Who dream instead of Easter eggs and fragrant grass
And search for beauty in the mystery of the sky.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who toss them like a lost and wounded dove.
Such gentle men are lonely in a merchant's world,
Unless they have a gentle one to love.

And some my favorite verses from Sohrab:

I had read a Persian translation of this one by Pablo Neruda while ago. Tonight I searched for the English and Spanish versions. Here is two parts of the English translation.

"He who becomes the slave of habit,
who follows the same routes every day,
who never changes pace,
who does not risk and change the color of his clothes,
who does not speak and does not experience, dies slowly.
...
He who slowly destroys his own self-esteem,
who does not allow himself to be helped,
who spends days on end complaining about his own bad luck,
about the rain that never stops, dies slowly.
..."

By the way, your reply to my last comment was so heartwarming and encouraging; thank you!

And I thank you, Universal Dimension Jan, for hearing the invitation and for accepting. Your contributions have been wonderful my friend.

The Bird is Mortal

I feel sick at heart
I feel sick at heart

I walk to the porch and scratch
My fingers against the stretched skin of night
Dark are lamps of relationship
Dark are lamps of relationship

No one will introduce me
To the sun
No one will take me to the feast of sparrows
Remember flight
The bird is mortal

FOR THE UNITED NATIONS:
IF YOU KINDLY CARE

Lost child, blinks blue eyes, hot tear flows down face,
as billion dollar bombs engulf ten cent shacks in flames
and the once-glittery dreams of honorable men
settle down like dust, enveloping the silent society,
as the sun burns to ashes, leaving nothing behind
but a whisper of quickly-fading light.

Misery clings to his soul like a heavy wet uniform
being bombarded by bullets of reddish raindrops.
Chunks of metal crunch, cracking open beneath
his powdery skin, that is boiling in the night.
Hands latch onto his legs, smelling of roasted flesh, clawing at his feet,
leaving fingerstains of pomegranate juice on his body,
as he drags himself on, praying for the rain to fall..

Oh Assal! Welcome back! I hope you are well my dear. Did you write that poem for Iraq and Afghanistan? It's really beautiful and made me cry. Please elaborate a little bit. Thank you. Thank you for coming. You are not late my dear. You're just on time.

My muse was Afghanistan, yes. I wrote this for a creative writing course at Diablo Valley College. We were asked to write either poetry or prose about war, but in a way so as the reader would not be able to know for sure which side we were on; soldier or civilian. Mine was the one where people argued the most. No one could tell for sure if I was writing as a young American soldier or as an Afghan child.

It makes me sad to see the date, 2002. Not much has changed, just many, many more have departed this world.

* مادر!

* مادرت اينجاست !...

I have to say that I don’t spend that much time reading poetry unfortunately. But I always enjoy hearing/ reading a good lyrics or poem. If I should pick my favorite poem by Sohrab, it will be صداي پاي آب “Water's Footsteps”.

My favorite poem of all time is “street” by Shamlo.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message: He is dead.
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves.
Let the traffic policeman wear black cotton gloves.

Hold up your umbrellas to keep off the rain
From Doctor Williams while he opens a vein;
Life, he pronounces, it is finally extinct.
Sergeant, arrest that man who said he winked!

Shawcross will say a few words sad and kind
To the weeping crowds about the Master-Mind,
While Lamp with a powerful microscope
Searches their faces for a sign of hope.

And Gunn, of course, will drive the motor-hearse:
None could drive it better, most would drive it worse.
He'll open up the throttle to its fullest power
And drive him to the grave at ninety miles an hour
