Alone With The Dishwasher

Ash-e-Reshteh, courtesy of my older sister.
I had my family to my house tonight. Did I tell you that I have many brothers and sisters? Half of us live in this area. The others are scattered in other parts of the world. Though I want to complain about that fact, I won't! I'm just glad that we do have a chance to see each other once a year now. This was a very good year for my family, because all of us got together this past summer, and most of us got together again this December, so no complaints there. I prepared for my family's arrival all day today, and now they have come and gone, leaving me with my thoughts in a house which is quiet, except for the humming of the dishwasher. For some reason, I'm missing my parents tonight. I think they would have loved to be here tonight. In a way, I think they were.

I'm so glad you got together with your friends and celebrated Yalda. About the Ash, actually, though I would like to take the credit, I should tell you that my older sister made it. Jaye hamegi khali bood. Be happy azizam and Merry Christmas.

Thank you my sweet friend, Neda. I dream of my parents regularly. They always seem so happy and peaceful and they are either having a party and guests, or they are going to a party! They were the best parents anyone could wish for, kind and generous and understanding. I am glad that the last years of their lives I had a chance to be in Tehran and spend time with them. I hope your parents live a long and prosperous life Neda Jan. Thanks again.

Thank you, thoughtful Halat! My parents live in my heart now. I hope your parents live to be 100. Good luck with that Ash-e-Reshteh. Do tell me how it turned out, or better yet, send me a picture or post it on your blog for me to come see! Be good azizam.

Thank you Bayram Jan! Yes, they are around and looking in on all of us. My parents never saw the twins, their "natijeh," and one of the twins looks exactly like my mother (they are not identical twins).

I wished you could have come to meet them last night. Merry Christmas Bayramali Khan!

Thank you Neda Jan. And a very Merry Christmas to you, too. I believe in God and I respect all ways in which other people of the world worship him. Thank you for that sweet comment my friend.

Yes, Shobeir, that is so true! I found new meaning and joy in my relationship with my parents when I became an adult myself, and more so since I became a parent myself. I am so happy that my children got to meet my parents when they were still alive. That has been an important part of their identity. Be good azizam.

Salam Masoud Jan:

Thank you for your kind and wise words about parents. One of the things I miss the most about being away from Iran is the chance to go and visit their graves, something I used to do regularly when I lived in Tehran. I do remember them all the time, especially in joyous occasions, because they were so good at keeping family traditions and celebrating life at any opportunity. Thank you.

Merry Christmas to you, too, my friend. Pray for peace on earth.
