Iran On My Mind

A member of the Andalibi Ensemble tunes her Oud at Fajr Music Festival, Tehran, December 2007.
سبزی صد چمن
سرخی خون من
سپیدی طلوع سحر
به پرچمت نشسته
ای ایران، ایران
Listen to Mohammad Nouri's Iran, Iran.* A beautiful song by a remarkable artist. This song feels really good tonight, as I am so homesick for Iran again. Memories have a mind of their own, and delight and dim as they please. I'm too tired tonight to fight them. I let them take me back to those streets, to those homes, to those villages, and to those bazaars. I willingly give myself to the memories of light, kindness, friendships, joys, and pains. I walk the sidewalks and hear the sounds. I feel the touches and embraces of the people I miss. I dream about Iran tonight.
*(Also, see a young Arash Sobhani play the base guitar in the band!)

Nazy jan I LOVE NOORIs sound and songs,I usually cry when I listen to them. Its funny but it comes from my childhood, crying with no reason when I listen such musics!!!;)

I live in Iran but even when I think to leave here it makes me so sad, this is not because of anything but my tremendous sense of affinity with this place and my family...
I would be so glad if I can do anything for you...may I take photos from here (anywhere in Tehran) or send you anything (I really mean it)that helps you with your homesickness...
please tell me

Hi Nazy jan,

First, I feel a bit guilty for having to do with bringing back the old memories of Iran to your head. All of us have memories that we try to put to rest but they tend to come back from time to time no matter how hard we try. Feeling homesick is not that bad after all. If nothing, it inspired you to post a this beautiful song on your blog.

Question: For the tile of this post you were inspired by Ray Charls' "Georgia on my mind", right?

Salam Masoud Jan:

Hee Hee, you were trying to make Nouri old, but in the process made me feel really old! Thank you for your kind advice. You are right. Our memories are what made us. Deleting them will be deleting a part of ourselves. Be good my friend.

Dear Beautiful Halat:

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. You are a gem. I don't need anything from Iran, other than the fabulous visitors I get from Iran, yourself included. I will take you up on your offer of photos, though. Can you send me a picture of a "laboo tray?" You know, when it's so cold outside and steam rises from the piping hot beets? I would love to have such a picture. If you can't manage it, it's o.k., too. I have the image in my mind. Take care azizam and come back soon.

Salam Uni-Far Jan:

I'm so glad your internet speed has improved. That's great news! I'm glad you like that song, too. Happy New Year to you, too, Universal Farshad Jan.

Salam Chakameh Jan:

On that CD, Sarzamin-e-Khorshid, there is a song named "Gilan." Though I am not a Gilak and I don't speak the dialect, I love listening to that song and singing along. Nouri is lovely and full of memories and good feelings for so many Iranians. I hope he lives a long time and keeps singing to us. Thanks so much for visiting Chakameh Jan. Happy New Year.

Salam Fari Jan:

Happy New Year to you, too, my friend. Though Moslem Iranians don't celebrate the Christian New Year in Iran, I know that Christian Iranian start their Christmas and New Year's celebrations tonight and will continue for the next two weeks. I hope it is a good year for everyone and for humanity. Be happy doostam.

Hee Hee, Ehsan Jan. Don't feel guilty! I get like this occasionally and I don't mind it at all. As I said to Masoud, we must never attempt to erase our past and our experiences. They are what make us who we are. I really enjoyed listening to that Boushehri music long after you and Maryam had left last night. It was amazing.

Yes, clever Ehsan! That song's title inspired this title. Be good and Happy New Year to you and Mah-e-Taban Maryam.
